Five tips for taking awesome pictures for a commission

When taking a picture for a painting or drawing commission, here are five things you can do to ensure that we have a good reference material for inspiration.

  1. Choose the right lighting. Natural light is always best for photography, but if you’re shooting indoors, try to find a spot near a window where the light is soft and even. Avoid using direct flash, as this can create harsh shadows and highlights.
  2. Compose your shot carefully. Think about what you want us to focus on in the painting or drawing. Is it the subject’s face? Their expression? Their clothing? Once you know what you want to emphasize, compose your shot accordingly.
  3. Use a high-resolution camera. The higher the resolution of your camera, the more detail we will have to work with. If you don’t have a high-resolution camera, try to get as close to the subject as possible. Most smartphones can take reasonable pictures.
  4. Take multiple photos from different angles and distances for options to consider, select the best. If you are not sure, we are happy to provide feedback as to which option seems to be the best.
  5. Edit your photos carefully. Once you’ve taken your photos, edit them carefully to remove any distractions and enhance the subject’s features. Be careful not to over-edit your photos, as this can distort the subject’s appearance. We can adjust the photograph further if you rather send the unedited pictures.

Here are three bonus tips for taking a picture:

  • Avoid taking photos from above or below the subject. This can distort their features.
  • If you’re taking a photo of a pet, try to get them to look at the camera. You can do this by holding a treat or toy in front of the lens.
  • If you’re taking a photo of a landscape, try to include a foreground element, such as a rock, tree, or flower. This will give us a better sense of scale and depth.

Once you’ve taken your photos and selected the best one(s), send them to us using the commission request form. This blog post provides more information with an easy list the steps for the request.
